NigeriaWatch gives three kind of information:

1) A database on violence
2) Some trends of violence
3) A security map

1) A database on violence : To consult the database, you can search events by entering key words, choosing a date or selecting a state or a LGA. The advanced search allows the selection of violent events according to their protagonists, the relationship between protagonists, the causes, the number of deaths recorded and the duration of the conflict. To do so, simply choose one or several items in the index of protagonists, relationships and causes. Regarding the number of deaths and days, enter a minimal, maximal or accurate figure. You can print your results or export them on Excel.

2) Some trends of violence : Regarding our graphs, the main trend provides a global picture per year. You can then sharpen the request and focus on a period of time, a region (state or LGA), the protagonists, their relationship and the causes of violence. Please note that we differentiate between "major oil companies" and "other oil companies", which include the NNPC and independent oil companies. While the latter are both involved in production and distribution, the former are concentrated in oil producing states. Don't forget to click on "Display" to get your results. The "Corpus" section allows you to specify how you want the results to appear: per year, per month, per day or globally. To make things easier to read, we suggest you request monthly results in a yearly period of time. Click on "None" if you need global figures according to a chosen period of time. The "Measure" section helps to sharpen the request as well. The absolute or the relative numbers of deaths give absolute figures or rates as compared to the population. The duration of violence produces absolute or relative figures according to the total of days or their average per event in a given period of time. To further sharpen your request, you can select a source of information (police or press) and display the graphs according to the kind of protagonists involved, their relationship, the causes of violence and the number of deaths recorded. The latter shows for instance if there is a correlation between the intensity of violence and its absolute or relative duration. It also allows you to see the distribution of deaths or homicide rates according to the intensity of violence.
Optionally, if you click on "Data", you can print your results or export them on Excel.

3) A security map : The main map provides a global picture per year. In the "Corpus" section of the Focus, you can sharpen your request and choose a period of time, a region (state or LGA), the protagonists, their relationship and the causes of violence. Please note that we differentiate between "major oil companies" and "other oil companies", which include the NNPC and independent oil companies. While the latter are both involved in production and distribution, the former are concentrated in oil producing states. The "Measure" section allows you to specify if you want the map to give results according to absolute or relative numbers of deaths (i.e. rates as compared to the population). To further sharpen your request, select a source of information (police or press). Don't forget to click on "Display" to get your results. You can also enlarge or reduce the scale, first by selecting the magnifying glass, then by clicking on the map. There are as many levels as you like. The magnifying glass on the left takes you back to the original national scale. To move inside the map, select an arrow. To focus on a position, select the cross by the right of the magnifying glass and click on the map.
Optionally, if you click on "Data", you can print your results or export them on Excel.
